Despite the fact that the Savinja Valley offers a wide range of experiences opportunities for sightseeing of natural and cultural sights, it is also a popular starting point for excursions around Slovenia. At a distance of 30 km, you can experience the historic towns of Celje and Kamnik, see the Velika planina or go for a pint of beer in Žalec featuring Europe’s first beer fountain. A great idea for a one-day excursion is also Koroška, where you can enjoy the scenes of the Karavanke Geopark and take a trip to the interesting Peca underground mine museum.

1. Beer Fountain, Green Gold Žalec and Pekel Cave
Žalec was put on a world’s map for beer lovers by featuring the only beer fountain in the world called Green Gold and due to its heritage of growing hops. At the beer fountain you can taste six different types of beer in mugs made by renowned Slovenian designer Oskar Kogoj

PEKEL CAVE – INFORMATION OPENING HOURS AND ENTRANCE FEES

Before you head out for beers, take a look at the natural pearl of the Ponikovski karst, the Pekel Cave, with a 4 meter underground waterfall and interesting shapes made of colorful stonecrops. This 3 million years old cave is a great idea for a trip. The cave tour takes about an hour. Do not forget to bring suitable footwear and warm clothing, since the temperature sits at refreshing at 10 ° C.

The cave is open from March to October, for larger groups please make pripor arrangements and please check the opening hours prior your visit.

2. Round Tour of Kamniško-Savinjske Alps

If you desire mountain air and beauty of the Alpine spaces, and prefer to travel by bike or car, enjoy the green grace and the hospitality of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, which is always features good home-made food. From the Upper Savinja Valley the road leads across the picturesque passage Pavličevo sedlo to the Austrian side, from there over the Jezerski Vrh back towards Slovenia, to the remote Jezersko. Treat yourself to a stop along the idyllic Lake of Planšar and continue towards the medieval town of Kamnik, and from there across the Črnivec and Gornji Grad towards the Upper Savinja Valley. Marathon Alps event is also taking place on the same route.

3. Geopark Karavanke, an Adventurous Journey into the History of the Earth

Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark is a cross-border adventure space that invites visitors during every season to explore the mysterious underground labyrinth of an abandoned mine by bicycle, kayak or on foot. If you are keen on biking, you should go under the Koroška’s surface accompanied by a guide. The park can also be viewed with a kayak, where accompanied by a guide you you will descend 700 meters below the surface on magnificent underground lakes. Before the entrance to the mine, there is a park which is an especially interesting attraction for children, featuring dinosaurs, king Matjaž and various crystals.

4. Celje, the Count’s story

Celje was marked by one of the once strongest European noble families. The old castle, where interesting cultural events take place during summer evenings, is one of the most important medieval castles in Slovenia. It is home to one of the most beautiful Slovene love stories written by the noble Friderik and Veronika. Also visit Provincial Museum and indulge yourself at any of the cafes in the old part of town.
