Guided Hike to Matkov škaf

At the end of the glacial Matk Valley, nature annually creates a truly unique phenomenon, Matkov Škaf. This natural wonder is a must-see.

Matkov Škaf is a fascinating snow formation that delights visitors every spring. Located at 1,480 meters (4,856 ft) below the mighty walls of Mrzla Gora, thick avalanche snow forms a distinctive crater – a snow cauldron shaped like a "škaf" (wooden tub). This natural spectacle emerges as snow melts, carving a hole up to 30 meters (98 ft) deep and 20—30 meters (66-98 ft) wide. 

Adding to its magic is an approximately 40-meter (131 ft) high waterfall cascading directly above the snowfield from a rock face. Fed by meltwater from a cirque, it combines with Matkov Škaf to create a spectacular, unmissable scene – especially in spring, when nature truly showcases its power and beauty.

Important Visitor Information: Access to Matkov Škaf is via a challenging mountain trail requiring good physical condition and appropriate gear. All hikers undertake the trek at their own risk and must have suitable winter equipment. Safe and responsible hiking should always be your priority.
