On the Way to the Black Sea

Log Driver’s Collection in Ljubno tells stories that the locals are especially proud of. Harvesting timber into the valley from forests high in the hills, working on sawmills, making rafts, and rafting to distant places are hard work. Only made possible by the diligent hands of the ancestors of “vlcerjev”, foresters and log drivers. Explore how these brave men lived, and the adventures along the Savinja, Sava and Danube, all the way to the Black Sea.

You will also learn about the dangers they faced on the waterway, they earnings, what were their individual tasks, the kinds of rafts they made, and their rights of passage under the patronage of St. Nicholas? Visit the Log Driver’s Collection and experience a small part of their colorful life.
 

Log Driving in Ljubno

In Ljubno ob Savinji log driving was a way of life that provided food for most families in the area. The wood, which was cut down by hard-working men and sailed along Ljubnica and Savinja to Ljubno, was later sawn in sawmills. Ljubno in the past featured as many as 48 in Ljubno. Using the logs they constructed rafts and drove logs on a long journey that ended in Belgrade or even lower in Romania.
 

If you would like to experience log driver’s past you are invited to come to Log Driver’s Ball, an annual event held at the end of July and end end in the first Sunday in August. You can actually experience traditional log driving as well as the traditional Ljubno’s party.
